How to Steer a Car Properly
Before you are thinking of hitting the road, the first thing you have to know about the proper wheel steering techniques. Although it seems very easy to do but, first-time drivers spend a lot of time managing the technique of the steering wheel. This happens at first because; they have no idea about the right grip.
This is the reason, if you want to make this fast thing and miss some crucial lessons about steering wheel then, it can be a disaster on the road. So, before you move to advanced skills, let’s have a look at the basics of how to steer a car properly.
Getting used to the wheel:
While you are taking the driving lesson, your instructor will make you focus on the basic rules of driving. The first thing you need to do first is to learn the cockpit. Once you are finally set behind the wheels and put your feet on the pedals, now you have to get used to the clutch pedal.
You will not be able to maneuver the wheels until your instructor moves the car into a quiet area. As you drive, your teacher will help you with some tips on the steering wheel, so you feel it naturally. He or she will help you handle the steering and allow you to park in a safe place.
Hand positions while steering a car:
If you are not used to driving, then you must learn where to put your hands on the wheel. If you know the basic things properly then it will be easier to drive the vehicle. To learn the hand positions, you can relate to the system of a clock. Here, you only have to remember two positions to Steer a Car. The first is, you have to place your left hand in a ten o’clock position. The next is to put your right hand on the wheel in a two o’clock position. Your hands will move when you take a turn, but otherwise, the hand positions will be the same.
Steering the vehicle on the move:
After you have settled with the hand position, now you have to move. In this step, the lesson can be a bit tricky for learners. The moment you turn the wheel, you have to begin with crossing your arms over the other. You will find out the position soon, but the right system is to use the pull and push technique. This system will help you keep track of the number of times you have turned the wheel and this way you can manage to control the car.
Tips on Steering a car:
Once you have learned the pull and push system, you will now have to learn to change the lanes then, turn into a point and stop with the smallest effort. Before you start the car, there are some extra situations that will make steering easier than before.
- Reversing: Steering in reverse is a complex thing for learners. When your instructor allows you to move onto the reverse position, you might get confused for a while. You might ask the instructor about the way you should put in the reverse gear. However, it’s a simple task, then you have thought. You just have to steer the wheel in the direction you want to reach. If you are reversing to the left, turn the wheel to the left side. In the case of the right side, you have to turn to the right side.
When you are putting the wheel in reverse, make sure to check the vehicle’s blind spots and mirrors to see if there’s anyone on the road. When you are checking the blind-spots, you might have to rest your left arm over the passenger seat to set your body in a comfortable position. For this, you have to keep your hand on the wheel in the 12 o’clock position.
- Parking and maneuvering the car: When you have to park the vehicle, normally you have to face the wheels forward. To achieve this position, you have to be in a straight position and hold the wheel the same way. If the parking area is uphill, you might have to turn the wheel a little bit. If parking downhill, you need to keep the wheel facing the curb.
To get maneuvering right, you need to learn the right steering technique. The smallest mistakes will ruin the technique, and it will be a huge fault during the driving test you are taking in Canada. Make sure you learn the methods of steering the wheel properly, as it will save you from accidents.
